NANTES, France – April 24, 2025 — A tragic stabbing incident at a private school in western France has left one student dead and at least three others injured, according to French media reports. The attack occurred on Thursday afternoon at Notre-Dame-de-Toutes-Aides, a prominent educational institution in the eastern part of Nantes.
Chaos Erupts as Knife Attack Unfolds
Authorities responded swiftly after reports of a violent incident inside the school grounds. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic, with students fleeing the area and others confined to classrooms as security protocols were activated around lunchtime.
According to early reports, the attacker—believed to be a fellow student—was quickly subdued by a teacher and later arrested at the scene by law enforcement officers. The motive behind the attack remains unclear at this time.
A substantial number of emergency personnel, including police, medical teams, and even army officers, were deployed to the school, which was immediately evacuated.
Parents, Officials React with Shock and Grief
As news of the attack spread, distressed parents gathered outside the school, anxiously waiting to be reunited with their children. “We’re just waiting to hold them in our arms,” one father told Reuters, describing the emotional toll of the day.
The school, which has a student population of approximately 2,000 spanning from nursery to high school, was placed on lockdown shortly after the incident. By 3:30 p.m. local time, students were gradually escorted out of the facility by authorities.
National and Regional Leaders Respond
France’s Education Minister Élisabeth Borne expressed deep sympathy in a message posted to social media:
“I will travel to Nantes to express my solidarity with the victims, their families, and the entire educational community.”
Joining her will be the Interior Minister and Christelle Morançais, President of the Pays de la Loire region, who said she was “devastated” by the tragedy. Nantes Mayor Johanna Rolland, who visited the scene, called the attack an “atrocious tragedy” and conveyed her emotional support for those affected.
Public prosecutor Antoine Leroy also arrived at the scene and is expected to give a full statement during a press conference later in the evening, as the investigation into the attack progresses.
A City in Mourning, A Nation in Shock
The attack on Notre-Dame-de-Toutes-Aides comes at a time of heightened concern in France over security in schools and mental health issues among youth. As the country processes this shocking act of violence, the community in Nantes is rallying around the victims and their families, united in grief and calls for justice.
Authorities have confirmed that Rue des Épinettes, the street where the school is located, remains closed to the public as forensic teams conduct their work.
Further updates are expected as the investigation develops.
