Israel Verifies Hostages’ Bodies Returned by Hamas

In a solemn and deeply emotional development in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, Israel’s government has officially confirmed the identities of two deceased hostages returned through a Red Cross-facilitated exchange. The painstaking forensic process verified the remains of Amiram Cooper, 84, and Sahar Baruch, 25—both victims of the brutal October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack that ignited the devastating Gaza war.

The Israeli prime minister’s office expressed profound sorrow, empathizing with the grief of the Cooper, Baruch, and all hostage families. This confirmation ends weeks of uncertainty for some, yet presses the haunting demand for the immediate return of all remaining Israeli and foreign deceased captives still held by Hamas in Gaza.

The Human Toll of Hostage Abductions in the Israel-Hamas War

The events surrounding the abductions and murders of the confirmed deceased hostages are tragic chapters in this brutal conflict. Amiram Cooper was seized alongside his wife Nurit during the initial Hamas assault on Kibbutz Nir Oz. Nurit was eventually released after 17 harrowing days in captivity—yet Amiram was held longer, with Israeli estimates placing his murder in captivity by February 2024 during Israeli military operations in Khan Younis. Official investigations await post-mortem conclusions, but initial findings suggest a brutal fate.

Sahar Baruch was kidnapped during a simultaneous violent Hamas attack on Kibbutz Be’eri, where his brother Edan and grandmother Geula Bachar were killed. Israeli military assessments dated Sahar’s murder as early as December 8, 2023, during captivity, countering Hamas claims that hostages died during Israeli rescue attempts. The military has expressed sorrow and condemned Hamas’ failure to abide by international agreements to return all hostages promptly with dignity.

Hostages and Missing Families Forum Demands Immediate Action

Representing many hostage families, Israel’s Hostages and Missing Families Forum underscored the ongoing anguish: “There are no words to express the depth of this pain. The hostages have no time. We must bring them all home, now!” The forum’s demands align with the US-brokered ceasefire agreement requiring Hamas to return 20 living hostages and 28 deceased individuals within 72 hours.

While all living Israeli hostages were released mid-October in exchange for 250 Palestinian prisoners and thousands of Gazan detainees, the thorny issue remains the full accounting of deceased. Currently, 11 dead hostages—nine Israeli, one Tanzanian, one Thai—remain in Hamas control as a grim bargaining tool amid stalled diplomacy.

Controversies and Violations Shaping the Ceasefire Fragility

Ceasefire conditions brokered by the United States, Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey continue to face severe challenges. Israel recently accused Hamas of violating the ceasefire by handing over incorrect remains and staging false discovery scenes to the Red Cross, actions deemed “unacceptable” by international observers. Hamas denied wrongdoing, counter-accusing Israel of fabricating pretexts for renewed aggression.

Further escalations emerged when Israel blamed Hamas fighters for killing an Israeli soldier in southern Gaza, prompting Israel to unleash extensive retaliatory air strikes against numerous targets linked to Hamas militants. These strikes resulted in significant Palestinian casualties, including children and women, marking the deadliest day since the ceasefire began.

Despite the tensions, US President Donald Trump reinforced his commitment to the ceasefire’s stability, emphasizing America’s mediation role. Yet, he balanced this with support for Israel’s right to “hit back” when its soldiers are threatened, underscoring the fragile and complex dynamics governing the ceasefire’s future.

A Deadly Human Cost: Figures Reveal the Scale of the Gaza Conflict

The numbers tell a harrowing story. Since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which led to the deaths of approximately 1,200 Israelis and abducted hundreds, the ensuing Israeli military campaign in Gaza has taken a staggering toll. The Gaza Health Ministry reports over 68,600 Palestinian deaths, including civilians, women, and children—a number that continues to rise even after the ceasefire took hold on October 10, 2025.

Israel has so far returned 15 bodies of deceased hostages, plus two foreign nationals, in exchange for 195 Palestinian bodies. The ongoing exchange negotiations remain among the most sensitive and politically charged issues in the conflict, reflecting deep-rooted animosities, international legal debates, and human rights concerns.

International Legal and Humanitarian Imperatives

The forced abduction, murder, and unlawful detention of civilians constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law. The role of impartial entities such as the Red Cross is critical in ensuring humane treatment of captives and respect for ceasefire agreements. However, the recent revelations about staged scenes and contested returns threaten to undermine trust and cooperation.

As hostages become tragic symbols of the conflict’s inhumanity, calls intensify for decisive diplomatic pressure on Hamas to comply fully with humanitarian obligations. The return of all hostages’ remains must occur with urgency and dignity, not only for family closure but to uphold the rule of law in this volatile and protracted war zone.

What Lies Ahead for the Hostage Crisis and Gaza Ceasefire?

The confirmation of Amiram Cooper’s and Sahar Baruch’s deaths draws international attention once again to the unresolved plight of hostages and refugees in Gaza and Israel. The ceasefire’s longevity depends heavily on mutual compliance but faces persistent strain from violent provocations and political mistrust.

For Israel, recovering every hostage—alive or dead—is a non-negotiable national priority, intertwined with broader security concerns and public morale. For Hamas and its regional backers, hostages remain a strategic asset amid geopolitics and humanitarian activism.

The coming weeks are crucial to uphold the fragile ceasefire, ensure full accountability for the missing and murdered hostages, and prevent a catastrophic slide back into full-scale war. Diplomats, mediators, and international watchdogs must amplify efforts to guarantee transparent, verifiable, and humane resolutions amid the Gaza conflict’s complex humanitarian crisis.
