Devastating 7.7 Quake Hits Thailand, Myanmar

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Thailand and Myanmar on Friday, March 28, 2025, unleashing chaos, claiming lives, and leaving communities in despair. Centered near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, the midday quake triggered a deadly high-rise collapse in Bangkok and prompted Myanmar to declare a state of emergency across six regions. A strong 6.4-magnitude aftershock followed, intensifying the destruction. Here’s everything you need to know about this catastrophic event.

Deadly High-Rise Collapse in Bangkok: 3 Killed, 90 Missing

In Bangkok, tragedy struck when a high-rise building under construction crumbled near the bustling Chatuchak market. The collapse killed at least three people, including a construction worker crushed by falling debris and another hit by rubble that smashed into his truck. Rescue worker Songwut Wangpon confirmed the grim toll, while Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai reported 90 people still unaccounted for.

Dramatic social media footage captured the crane-topped structure toppling into a massive dust cloud as horrified onlookers screamed and fled. So far, seven survivors have been pulled from the debris, but unstable rubble has stalled efforts to reach those potentially trapped beneath. Authorities have declared Bangkok a disaster area to speed up emergency response efforts in a city of over 17 million residents.

Chaos and Panic Grip Bangkok Streets

The earthquake sent shockwaves through Bangkok, with sirens blaring and gridlocked traffic clogging the streets. The city’s elevated transit and subway systems shut down, stranding commuters. Office workers, shoppers, and tourists alike poured into open spaces like Benjasiri Park, fleeing swaying high-rises and collapsing structures.

“I thought I was dizzy at first,” said April Kanichawanakul, who evacuated from the tenth floor of Tonson Tower. Tourist Fraser Morton described a mall turning into a scene of “screaming and panic,” with people running the wrong way down escalators amid crashing debris. Another visitor, Paul Vincent, witnessed a rooftop pool spilling water as buildings swayed, calling the panic “horrendous.” For many, like lawyer Voranoot Thirawat, it was their first-ever earthquake—an unforgettable jolt to a city unaccustomed to such tremors.

Myanmar in Crisis: State of Emergency Declared

Closer to the epicenter in Mandalay, the damage was immediate and severe. Myanmar’s military government declared emergencies in six regions, including Naypyitaw and Mandalay, but ongoing civil war complicates relief efforts. The Red Cross reported downed power lines and significant destruction in Mandalay, Sagaing, and southern Shan state, with humanitarian needs still unclear.

In Sagaing, a 90-year-old bridge collapsed, and sections of the Mandalay-Yangon highway were damaged. Mandalay’s historic royal palace and other buildings suffered cracks and collapses, while Naypyitaw saw religious shrines topple. Despite the region’s earthquake-prone nature, its sparse population and low-rise structures may have limited casualties—though reports are still emerging.

Ripple Effects: Bridge Down, Injuries in China

The quake’s reach extended beyond Thailand and Myanmar. In China’s Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, particularly the border city of Ruili, houses were damaged, and injuries were reported. Videos showed debris-strewn streets and stretchers rushing victims to safety. In Mangshi, 60 miles from Ruili, residents said the shaking was so intense they couldn’t stand. Even in Kunming, Yunnan’s capital, ceiling lamps swung wildly for over 10 seconds.

Shallow Quake Amplifies Destruction

According to the U.S. Geological Survey and Germany’s GFZ, the earthquake struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), amplifying its destructive power. Shallow quakes often cause more surface damage, and the 6.4 magnitude aftershock only worsened the toll. Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention noted the tremor was felt nationwide, prompting Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to convene an emergency meeting.

What’s Next for Thailand and Myanmar?

As rescue teams battle unstable rubble in Bangkok and aid struggles to reach Myanmar’s war-torn regions, the full scope of this disaster is still unfolding. With power outages, damaged infrastructure, and fears of more aftershocks, both nations face a long road to recovery. Stay tuned for updates as relief efforts ramp up and survivors share their stories of resilience amid the chaos.
