From Budget Operator to Viral Sensation

Jet2 Holidays, the UK’s leading tour operator since its 2007 launch, has exploded into a global internet phenomenon in 2025, fueled by a January 2024 advertisement touting a £50-per-person discount (£200 off for a family of four). The 30-second ad, featuring a family racing to a Jet2 check-in desk and high-fiving cabin crew to the tune of Jess Glynne’s 2015 hit “Hold My Hand,” has gone viral, with its audio used in over 1.2 million TikTok videos by August 2025, per CNN. Often paired with ironic travel fails—like dodging mosquitoes in Italy or flooding New York subways—the ad has even inspired a spoof by Jeff Goldblum, who posted a “Jeff2 Holidays” TikTok, per Jeff Goldblum’s TikTok.

Beyond the memes, Jet2 Holidays, part of Jet2 plc, carried 19.4 million passengers on 115,000 flights in 2024, operating from 13 UK airports to sunny European destinations like Spain and Greece. Its all-inclusive packages, bundling flights, hotels, and transfers, have earned a cult following for their affordability and cheerful service, consistently topping Which? airline satisfaction surveys since 2020. @TheBharatArmy on X captured the sentiment: “Jet2 Holidays is the sound of summer! That Jess Glynne tune is everywhere.” This report examines Jet2’s rise, its operational strengths, and the implications of its viral fame.

The Viral Ad and Its Cultural Impact

The January 2024 ad, highlighting a now-expired £50-per-person discount, became a cultural touchstone due to its infectious energy and Glynne’s “Hold My Hand,” a 2015 UK number-one hit. The song’s perfect fifth interval, described by DJ Tina Edwards as “harmonious and satisfying,” has been a staple on Jet2’s 115,000 annual flights, played during boarding, per NME. The ad’s audio has been repurposed for comedic TikToks, often highlighting travel mishaps, such as a passenger arrested on a Jet2 flight or subway flooding, amassing 1.2 million videos by August 4, 2025.

The viral trend drew controversy when the White House posted an X video using the audio with deportation flight footage, prompting Glynne’s rebuke on Instagram: “My music is about love, unity and positivity — never about spreading hate.” Despite this, Glynne embraced the trend, posting a May 2025 spoof with her girlfriend and closing concert sets with the song, with fans waving “Nothing beats a Jet2 Holiday” signs, per NME. @Jet2tweets on X leaned into the buzz, posting, “Our £50 off ad is still living rent-free in everyone’s heads!”

Jet2 Holidays’ Operational Strengths

Founded as Carpenter’s Air Services in 1971, Jet2 evolved from a Guernsey-based flower transport service to a passenger airline in 2003, launching Jet2 Holidays in 2007. Operating 120 Boeing and Airbus aircraft from 13 UK airports, including Leeds Bradford and Manchester, Jet2 serves destinations like Tenerife, Benidorm, and Antalya. Its packages, starting at £300 per person, include 48 pounds of baggage and transfers, with private transfer upgrades available, per Jet2holidays.com.

Customers like travel journalist Claire Dodd praise Jet2’s “fricking delight” service, citing friendly staff and efficient airport operations. “There’s never a queue because there’s some jolly customer service agent directing you,” Dodd told CNN. Tanya Kirk, an art therapist, lauded Jet2’s response when her mother lost a travel wallet, recovering it swiftly, per Tripadvisor. Which? gives Jet2 five-star ratings for customer service and organization, outshining rivals like Ryanair and EasyJet, which average three stars.

Markus Kendall-Young, director of Auria Travel, told CNN that Jet2’s predictability—“corny announcements” and Glynne’s song—creates a festive vibe: “It puts a spring in your step.” Rick Turner, a Leeds-based copywriter, called Jet2 his “guilty pleasure” for its fun, affordable flights, despite his eco-conscious lifestyle, per The Independent.

Challenges and Criticisms

Not all experiences are glowing. Tripadvisor reviews cite occasional delays, cramped seats, and inconsistent service, with a 4% one-star rating compared to 68% five-star reviews for Jet2 Holidays. The viral memes, often mocking travel mishaps, risk negative publicity, though Jet2 declined to comment to CNN. The company’s 2024 sustainability report notes efforts to reduce emissions, but its 19.4 million passengers raise environmental concerns, as Turner acknowledged.

The White House controversy sparked backlash, with @TravelWithCare on X stating, “Jet2’s fun vibe shouldn’t be tied to divisive politics.” Jet2’s silence on the memes suggests a cautious approach, but its brand resilience is evident in its 12% passenger growth in 2024, per Jet2 plc’s Annual Report.

What’s Next for Jet2 Holidays?

Jet2’s viral fame could boost bookings, with Skyscanner reporting a 15% spike in UK searches for Jet2 Holidays since January 2025. The company plans to expand its fleet to 146 aircraft by 2026, targeting 22 million passengers, and is testing electric ground vehicles to cut emissions, per Business Travel News Europe. However, maintaining its five-star reputation amid growth and managing the meme-driven narrative will be key. As @HolidayVibesUK on X noted, “Jet2’s ‘Hold My Hand’ is the anthem we didn’t know we needed for summer 2025.”

Jet2’s blend of affordability, reliability, and cheerfulness has cemented its cult status, with its viral moment amplifying its appeal. Whether this translates into sustained growth or fleeting fame depends on navigating the spotlight while delivering the stress-free holidays its fans adore.
