In a spectacular season finale at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal Women edged Manchester United 4-3 in a goal-packed thriller to secure second place in the Barclays Women’s Super League (WSL). The hard-fought win not only gave the Gunners a statement victory over a top-four rival but also secured their direct qualification to the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage next season, avoiding an extra round of qualifiers.
Despite both teams already securing Champions League football, the stakes were high on Saturday afternoon, and neither side treated it like a dead rubber. In front of 46,603 roaring fans, Arsenal and United delivered a fitting finale that underlined the WSL’s growing global appeal and elite competitiveness.
Chloe Kelly Shines in Possible Farewell
The drama kicked off almost immediately when Chloe Kelly, on loan from Manchester City, took advantage of a rare goalkeeping error from Phallon Tullis-Joyce in the 2nd minute to give Arsenal the early lead. The England winger was electric down the flank and later earned Player of the Match honors, possibly bidding farewell to the Emirates in style.
Manchester United were undeterred, and just 10 minutes later, Ella Toone headed home from close range after a rebound off a Melvine Malard effort was parried by Arsenal keeper Manuela Zinsberger. The early equalizer fired up the crowd and set the tone for a match brimming with intensity.
Second-Half Surge Seals the Deal
The second half belonged to Arsenal — at least initially — as they came out of the break with renewed energy and purpose. Caitlin Foord, a constant threat down the left flank, darted into the box and drew a clumsy foul that left the referee with little choice but to point to the spot. Mariona Caldentey stepped up and coolly slotted home the penalty, sending Phallon Tullis-Joyce the wrong way to net her 18th goal of a prolific debut season in the WSL.
Just minutes later, Arsenal’s midfield clicked into high gear. Katie McCabe, eager to atone for an uneven first half, split the United defense with a sublime, curling through-ball that found Frida Maanum in stride. The Norwegian midfielder made no mistake, finishing with composure into the far corner to make it 3-1 and send the Emirates into raptures.
With momentum firmly on their side, Arsenal turned up the pressure. Kim Little, the beating heart of the Gunners’ midfield, took control. In the 60th minute, she received a square pass just outside the box, shifted the ball onto her right foot, and rifled a low shot into the bottom corner past the outstretched arms of Tullis-Joyce. The goal — her fifth of the season — capped a vintage performance from the club captain and appeared to seal the result at 4-1.
At that stage, Arsenal looked in total command, carving open spaces at will and dominating possession. The Emirates crowd began to sense a comfortable finish — but Manchester United had other plans.
Late Fightback Not Enough for United
A poor back pass from McCabe gifted substitute Elisabeth Terland a chance in the 70th minute, which she tucked away clinically. Just six minutes later, McCabe was again involved, this time conceding a penalty for a rash challenge on Celin Bizet. Maya Le Tissier slotted home from the spot, cutting the deficit to just one.
United pushed hard for a late equalizer, but Arsenal held firm, buoyed by the Emirates faithful. The final whistle brought a wave of relief and celebration as Jonas Eidevall’s side locked in their spot as runners-up in the WSL and avoided the perils of Champions League qualifiers.
Eyes on the Finals
The win propels Arsenal into a high-stakes final later this month. They will face defending champions Barcelona in the UEFA Women’s Champions League Final on Saturday, May 24, 2025, in Bilbao. It’s a golden opportunity for the Gunners to claim European glory after a resilient domestic campaign.
Meanwhile, Marc Skinner’s Manchester United will turn their focus to domestic silverware as they take on WSL champions Chelsea in the Women’s FA Cup Final at Wembley next Sunday, May 18, 2025.
Final 2024–25 WSL Standings (Top 3):
