The Curious Case of Elon Musk: CEO, Political Sidekick, and Walking PR Disaster

Tesla, the crown jewel of America’s electric vehicle push, is at a crossroads and it’s Elon Musk who built the road, lit the fire, and then acted surprised when it all started smoking.

On one side, you’ve got President Donald Trump yes, that guy whose return to political life has dragged a red carpet right up to Musk’s feet. On the other side, you have reality: sagging Tesla sales, a stock chart that looks like a ski slope, and a worldwide customer base that’s increasingly allergic to Trump and his policies.

Tesla will report its earnings this Tuesday, and the spotlight will be firmly fixed on Musk, who will take questions from investors. But here’s the catch: If Musk keeps playing First Buddy with Trump, Tesla risks losing customers in the U.S. and abroad. If he ditches Trump, he may lose his political cover in Washington and his billionaire bromance.

Welcome to the mess Musk made.

Sales Are Sinking, Tariffs Are Biting, and Twitter Isn’t Helping

First-quarter numbers were brutal: Tesla suffered its biggest drop in sales since the company began posting steady double-digit growth. Now, investors want answers not memes, not tweets, not another flamethrower launch.

One of the hottest questions? What’s the real cost of Trump’s 25% tariffs on imported vehicles? Sure, Tesla builds its cars in the U.S. and doesn’t rely too heavily on foreign parts but as Musk himself admitted on X, it’s “not trivial.”

“Important to note that Tesla is NOT unscathed here,” Musk posted. “The tariff impact on Tesla is still significant.”

Well, no kidding.

Tesla has already halted orders for its higher-end Model S and X in China, thanks to Beijing’s retaliatory 125% tariff on U.S.-built vehicles. And while those cars only make up a sliver of Tesla’s sales, the message is loud and clear: the Chinese aren’t amused.

A No-Win Game of Tariff Ping-Pong

For all the talk about Tesla being better positioned than other automakers, the truth is grimmer. Musk is stuck in a geopolitical tennis match and both sides are serving fireballs.

Support Trump’s tariffs too loudly, and Tesla risks becoming persona non grata in China, its second-largest market after the U.S. In 2024, Tesla pulled in $20.9 billion in revenue from China about 21% of its total. But Chinese buyers are drifting toward domestic electric darlings like BYD. Why? Because nobody wants to feel like they’re buying a political statement.

Analyst Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities long a Tesla fanboy now says Musk is in a “code red situation.”

“Musk needs to leave the government, take a major step back on DOGE, and get back to being CEO of Tesla full-time,” Ives told his clients.

Translation: Get off the campaign trail, Elon, and get back to building cars.

DOGE Isn’t a Coin Here It’s a Headache

Let’s talk about DOGE no, not the meme coin. This one stands for Department of Government Efficiency, Trump’s latest bureaucratic Frankenstein. Musk has somehow become one of its key players.

You’d think the CEO of a multi-billion-dollar tech company would have enough on his plate. But no. Musk is moonlighting as a political adviser, helping Trump rework federal services like it’s just another Twitter thread.

The result? Protests outside Tesla showrooms. Reports of vandalism. Stock dips. Boycotts. Negative headlines stacking up like Tesla’s unbuilt Robotaxis.

Here’s a real investor question posted to Tesla’s Q&A board:

“How is the company planning to deal with the impact of Elon’s partnership with the current administration?”

And another:

“Is the Tesla board discussing whether their CEO should focus fully on Tesla and leave gov’t to elected politicians?”

Well, are they?

Promises, Promises and Not Much Else

Let’s revisit some of the sci-fi dreams Musk sold us: fleets of self-driving Robotaxis, humanoid robots doing our laundry, a new budget Tesla for the masses.

Where’s all that now?

The Austin-based Robotaxi service was supposed to start in June. But it’s already mid-April, and there’s been no update. Meanwhile, Waymo and Uber have already launched their own driverless taxi services in that same city.

“It would be a huge negative for the stock if he pushed back [the Robotaxi plans],” Ives said. “We need to hear good news there, because there’s not going to be good news in terms of earnings.”

So far, all we’ve got are vapor promises and AI-generated car sketches.

The Rally That Fizzled Out

Earlier this month, Tesla shares jumped after a report claimed Musk would step down from DOGE. Investors breathed a sigh of relief finally, the boss was going to boss again.

But then Musk and his pals in Washington said the report was wrong. Cue the stock plunge.

As JPMorgan Chase analyst Ryan Brinkman put it:

“Tesla’s first-quarter sales and production report causes us to think that if anything we may have underestimated the degree of consumer reaction.”

Translation: People aren’t just annoyed they’re actively avoiding Tesla. And why wouldn’t they? When your CEO is turning your favorite car brand into a campaign billboard, you start looking elsewhere.

A Company in Crisis, A CEO in Denial

Tesla has lost nearly half its market value since December. Think about that. Half. Gone.

And yet, Musk still acts like he’s doing us a favor by gracing the private sector with his attention. In truth, he’s become the very thing Tesla used to rebel against: a bloated, distracted executive too deep in his own mythology to see the road ahead.

“It’s turned into a nightmare for Tesla and for investors,” Ives told CNN. “The tariffs, the DOGE controversies, the brand damage it’s been a perfect storm.”

He’s not wrong.

Final Thoughts: Time to Pick a Lane, Elon

Elon Musk can’t be both the world’s edgiest tech visionary and a political pawn for Trump’s administration. Not without consequences. Tesla’s customer base isn’t MAGA country. It’s urban, international, climate-conscious, and let’s be real here not thrilled with the idea of their car CEO rubbing elbows with a man who once said wind turbines cause cancer.

There’s a simple truth Musk can’t tweet away: you can’t build the future while clinging to the past.

So here’s the call: ditch the politics. Walk away from DOGE. Stop playing Nostradamus and get back to what made Tesla interesting in the first place—good cars, clean energy, and the occasional flamethrower.

Because if you keep playing both sides, you’re bound to get run over
