But if you’re Elon Musk, you go on a media rampage, accusing the Biden administration of intentionally keeping two astronauts stranded for political gain. And here’s the kicker—one of the astronauts just backed him up.
The Mission That Wasn’t Supposed to Last This Long
It all started on June 5, 2024, when Wilmore and Williams launched to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard Boeing’s Starliner. It was meant to be a quick, eight-day trip. Instead, thanks to what NASA calls “technical issues,” they’ve been floating around the ISS for nearly nine months.
NASA decided the Starliner wasn’t safe enough to bring them home, so they sent the spacecraft back to Earth—empty. The astronauts? They were left to wait for another available ride.
Now, SpaceX will be the one bringing them home, aboard its Crew-9 mission set for March 19 or 20. But Musk says they could’ve been home much earlier—if not for politics.
Musk Calls It a Political Hostage Situation
In a fiery interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Musk didn’t mince words: “They were left up there for political reasons, which is not good.”
And in another interview with Joe Rogan, he took it a step further, claiming the Biden administration intentionally delayed their return just to ensure Trump’s allies wouldn’t get any credit for a successful mission.
“There’s no way they’re going to make anyone supporting Trump look good,” Musk said.
Conspiracy theory? Maybe. But here’s where it gets interesting. When Wilmore was asked about Musk’s claims, he didn’t dismiss them. In fact, he agreed.
“I Believe Him” – The Astronaut Speaks Out
During a press conference, Wilmore was asked point-blank whether Musk’s accusations held any weight. His response? “It is absolutely factual.”
Now, he did choose his words carefully, making it clear that he has “utmost respect” for Musk, Trump, and, well, presumably, the Biden administration, too. But when pressed about whether he had been kept in the dark regarding his extended stay, Wilmore admitted:
“That’s information that we simply don’t have, so I believe him.”
For context, the ISS has internet access. So if NASA was keeping them uninformed, it wasn’t because they couldn’t Google “Elon Musk astronauts stuck in space.” The question is—why didn’t they know?
NASA Denies Any Political Influence
Unsurprisingly, NASA is calling all of this nonsense. When asked about the situation, former NASA Administrator Bill Nelson was adamant:
“I can tell you unequivocally, from a personal standpoint, that politics has not played any part in this decision.”
NASA insists that safety concerns were the only factor in delaying the astronauts’ return. Boeing’s Starliner had multiple technical failures, and sending the astronauts back on a malfunctioning spacecraft was simply not an option.
Fair enough. But Musk argues that SpaceX could have picked them up months ago. So why wasn’t that plan approved?
