Since Elon Musk rebranded Twitter to X, the platform has become more polarizing, amplifying controversial content and rewarding engagement over accuracy. Musk’s alignment with Donald Trump and changes to moderation and monetization have fueled the rise of divisive voices. Critics argue that X prioritizes sensationalism, while its growing political influence raises concerns about accountability and free speech.

Elon Musk’s Social Experiment: How X Transformed in 2024

When Elon Musk acquired Twitter in 2022, he envisioned it as a platform championing free speech. Two years later, the platform, now rebranded as “X, has evolved into a polarizing space that amplifies divisive views and controversial narratives. Despite a smaller user base compared to other social media giants, X wields significant influence on political discourse, becoming a hub where governments, politicians, and public figures make announcements and express opinions. In 2024, the changes under Musk’s leadership, both technical and ideological, have sparked debates about the platform’s impact on global politics and its role as a public square.

Musk’s open alignment with Donald Trump, now the U.S. president-elect, underscores how X’s trajectory could reshape the relationship between social media leaders and political power. Emerging accounts like “Inevitable West” illustrate the platform’s shift. The profile, which claims to defend “Western values and culture,” quickly gained over 130,000 followers and garners millions of daily views. Its posts, often provocative and sometimes misleading, have been amplified by Musk himself. One viral post featured a doctored video of Trump jokingly threatening to “invade” the UK. Other posts promoted far-right figures, debunked claims about protests, and made inflammatory commentary on issues like immigration. Despite accusations of spreading disinformation and inciting hate, the account’s anonymous creator defends their content as representing the “silent majority and exposing “corrupt leaders.”.

This rise of controversial accounts coincides with changes to X’s monetization model, which allows premium users to earn revenue from engagement metrics like likes and shares. Some accounts report earning thousands of dollars monthly, creating financial incentives to post divisive content.

The Role of Algorithms and Moderation

X’s “For You” feed, similar to TikTok’s algorithmic model, now heavily promotes polarizing and sensational posts, according to observers. A project analyzing social media feeds found that fictional profiles across political spectrums were increasingly shown divisive, pro-Trump content in 2024.

Former safety analysts argue that the platform’s reduced content moderation, framed as a commitment to free speech, has created an environment where divisive rhetoric thrives. Critics like Nina Jankowicz, a disinformation expert, suggest that X now prioritizes engagement over factual accuracy, turning it into a reflection of humanity’s darker impulses.

Changing Rules, Growing Influence

Since Musk’s takeover, X has introduced several controversial updates. The block feature no longer prevents blocked users from viewing a profile, and likes are now private. Verification requires a paid subscription to X Premium, with additional privileges for paying users. These changes have helped amplify influential accounts, some of which claim to rival traditional media in reach. Moderation policies remain a contentious issue. While X prohibits “manipulated media” and allows fact-checking through community notes, accounts accused of spreading misinformation continue to thrive. Critics argue that the platform’s monetization policies incentivize sensationalism over accountability.

The Political Dimension & Global Ramifications

Musk’s endorsement of Trump during the 2024 election has deepened X’s ties to U.S. politics. Musk’s appointment to lead a new advisory group under Trump’s administration signals a growing connection between social media leadership and government power.

Other tech executives, including Mark Zuckerberg and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew, have also sought proximity to Trump amid regulatory pressures. The relationship between tech platforms and the new administration could set a precedent for how governments engage with social media companies. As platforms like X influence public discourse, their regulatory environments remain under scrutiny. The U.K.’s Online Safety Act and Australia’s proposed age restrictions for social media usage highlight growing concerns about online safety.

However, the U.S., home to many tech giants, will likely have the most significant impact on the industry’s future direction under Trump’s administration. Sam Freeman, a trust and safety expert, suggests Trump’s personal opinions about platforms like X could shape how his administration engages with them. Whether this leads to increased accountability or further deregulation remains to be seen, but the consequences will undoubtedly be far-reaching. In Musk’s words, X is “the town square of the internet, but its transformation raises critical questions about the balance between free speech, safety, and political influence in the digital age.

From my standpoint

In 2024, X transformed under Elon Musk’s leadership into a highly polarizing platform, blending free speech ideals with controversial changes in moderation, monetization, and algorithmic curation. These shifts have amplified divisive voices and blurred the lines between social media influence and political power, especially with Musk’s open alignment with Donald Trump and his growing role in U.S. politics.

X’s evolution highlights broader questions about the responsibilities of tech platforms in shaping public discourse, the incentives driving online content, and the impact of minimal regulation. As X wields growing influence on global politics, its trajectory raises concerns about the delicate balance between free speech, accountability, and social responsibility in the digital age.
