The details of Al-Miraj are found in numerous authentic Hadiths, narrated by companions such as Anas ibn Malik (RA) and Abu Hurairah (RA). Together, the Qur’an and Hadith establish Shab-e-Meraj as a confirmed and essential belief in Islam.
The Year of Sorrow (Aam al-Huzn)
To truly understand Shab-e-Meraj, one must first understand the emotional and historical backdrop against which it occurred.
The event took place during one of the most painful periods in the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) a time known in Islamic history as Aam al-Huzn, the Year of Sorrow. Within a short span, the Prophet lost two of the strongest pillars of support in his life: his beloved wife Hazrat Khadijah (RA) and his uncle Abu Talib.
Khadijah (RA) was not only his wife but also his first believer, his confidant, and his emotional refuge. Abu Talib, though not a Muslim, had protected the Prophet from the physical harm of the Quraysh. Their deaths left the Prophet exposed to increased hostility, rejection, and loneliness.
Soon after, the Prophet traveled to Taif, hoping to find acceptance. Instead, he was mocked, rejected, and physically attacked. Bleeding and broken-hearted, he turned to Allah in prayer not with anger, but with humility and trust.
It was after these darkest moments that Allah gifted him the most extraordinary honor: the journey of Shab-e-Meraj.
The Meaning of Shab-e-Meraj
The term Shab-e-Meraj comes from Persian and Arabic roots:
- Shab means night
- Meraj means ascension or elevation , or rising upward
In Arabic, the event is called Al-Isra wal-Miraj:
- Al-Isra refers to the miraculous night journey from Masjid al-Haram (Makkah) to Masjid al-Aqsa (Jerusalem)
- Al-Miraj refers to the ascension from Jerusalem through the heavens
This event occurred on the 27th night of the Islamic month of Rajab, by the command and power of Allah alone.
The Journey Begins: From Makkah to Jerusalem
On the blessed night, Angel Jibreel (AS) appeared before the Prophet. His chest was purified, symbolizing spiritual preparation for what no human had ever experienced before.
The Prophet was then brought a heavenly mount known as Buraq—described as a radiant creature faster than lightning. Mounted upon Buraq and accompanied by Jibreel (AS), the Prophet began the journey of Al-Isra.
In an instant, he traveled from the heart of Makkah to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem—today a distance of over 1,200 kilometers. This was not an ordinary journey; it was a declaration of Allah’s absolute power.
Masjid al-Aqsa holds profound significance in Islam. It was:
- The first Qiblah (direction of prayer)
- A sacred place associated with many prophets
- A spiritual link between Islam and earlier revelations
At Masjid al-Aqsa, the Prophet led all the previous prophets in prayer Adam, Ibrahim, Musa, and Isa (peace be upon them all). This moment symbolized the unity of the divine message and affirmed Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the final leader of all prophets.
Al-Miraj: Ascension Through the Seven Heavens
From Jerusalem, the journey continued upward. The Prophet ascended through the heavens, escorted by Angel Jibreel. Each level of heaven revealed a new dimension of divine wisdom and spiritual reality.
After Al-Isra, the Prophet ascended through the heavens in the journey known as Al-Miraj. At each level of heaven, he encountered a prophet who welcomed him with honor and respect.
The Seven Heavens
In the first heaven, the Prophet met Prophet Adam (AS), the father of humanity. He witnessed the souls of the righteous and the sinful, a reminder of accountability.
In the second heaven, he met Prophet Isa (Jesus) (AS) and Prophet Yahya (John) (AS) symbols of purity and sacrifice.
In the third heaven, he encountered Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) (AS), blessed with beauty and patience.
In the fourth heaven, he met Prophet Idris (AS), known for wisdom and elevation.
In the fifth heaven, he met Prophet Harun (Aaron) (AS), representing leadership and compassion.
In the sixth heaven, he met Prophet Musa (Moses) (AS), a prophet deeply concerned for the Ummah of Muhammad. It was Musa (AS) who later advised the Prophet regarding the number of daily prayers.
In the seventh heaven, the Prophet met Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) (AS), resting near Bayt al-Ma’mur, the heavenly house of worship visited daily by countless angels.
Each meeting reinforced the brotherhood of prophets and the continuity of Allah’s message throughout history.
Sidrat-ul-Muntaha: Where Words Fall Silent
Beyond the seven heavens lies Sidrat-ul-Muntaha, the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary. This is the point beyond which no creation can go—not even Angel Jibreel.
Here, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) experienced divine closeness in a manner beyond human understanding. The Qur’an hints at this encounter, but its true nature remains a matter of faith, not description.
This moment represents the highest honor ever granted to a human being.
The Greatest Gift: Salah
Among all the wonders of Shab-e-Meraj, the most enduring gift was Salah (prayer).
Initially, Allah commanded fifty daily prayers. As the Prophet descended, he consulted Prophet Musa (AS), who advised that the burden might be too heavy for the Ummah. After several returns by Allah’s mercy, the number was reduced to five daily prayers, while the reward remained equal to fifty.
This is why Salah is often described as the Miraj of the believer—a daily opportunity to rise spiritually and connect directly with Allah.
Unlike other acts of worship revealed on earth, Salah was gifted above the heavens, highlighting its unmatched importance in Islam.
Shab-e-Meraj also brought two other profound blessings:
- The last verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, which emphasize faith, mercy, and supplication
- The promise of forgiveness for believers who do not associate partners with Allah
These gifts reflect Allah’s compassion and His desire to ease the path for the Ummah.
Faith Tested on Earth
When the Prophet returned and shared his experience, the reaction in Makkah was divided.
The disbelievers mocked him openly, calling the journey impossible. Some weak believers wavered. But true faith shone through in the response of Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA).
Without hesitation, he declared:
“If Muhammad has said it, then it is true.”
For this unwavering belief, he earned the title As-Siddiq, the Truthful.
