As Mental Health Month sweeps across May, it reminds us of the crucial reality that mental health is not a luxury, but a lifeline—especially for first responders, veterans, and frontline responders. These responders face around-the-clock challenges, from fatigue and trauma to harsh criticism in the public eye and long, extended hours. And still, over 80% of first responders feel that seeking help for their mental health shows weakness, and over 70% carry unaddressed trauma as part of their service. Since the year 2000, over 130,000 veterans and first responders have committed suicide—a staggering price that must be addressed immediately.

We share the same purpose to transform this reality. As founder of the Guide App, President of the Pennsylvania Professional Fire Fighters Association (PPFFA), and Professor of Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania, we’re committed to solutions to empower the people who serve to thrive, not to survive.

The Guide App, a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Mission Daybreak Finalist, is the initial and sole evidence-based wellness platform tailored to first responders and veterans. Users have secure, anonymous access to bite-sized learning modules, peer-to-peer networks, and daily resiliency exercises that are tailored to their specific challenges and timeline. A University of Pennsylvania study proved that after one month, users had a 32% reduction in depression and a 9% reduction in anxiety, along with improved emotional well-being and social connectivity. A prior pilot study mirrored these results, where 75% of respondents employed the app weekly, with a 29% reduction in anxiety, plus amplified positive emotions.

Thanks to our alliance with the PPFFA, these materials, which are committed to countering stress, trauma, and burnout, are confidentially available to the Pennsylvania firefighters. Through the Guide App, police, public safety agencies, veterans, teachers, and frontline employees across the U.S. experience the power of connection rather than isolation.

This Mental Health Month, let’s shatter the myth that silence equals strength. Strength is really about reaching out for help and cultivating resilience. Our heroes simply deserve practical, effective mental wellness tools—anytime, anywhere. Let’s make sure they flourish.

The founder of Guide App is Patrick Sandone. Robert Brooks is the president of the Pennsylvania Professional Fire Fighters Association. Dr. Heather Nuske is the Research Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania.
