In a nation where peace and harmony are cherished, a political firestorm has erupted, threatening to tear at Bangladesh’s soul. On May 6, 2025, Shahjahan Chowdhury, a top leader of Jamaat-e-Islami in Chittagong and a central figure in its Shura council, stood before a crowd at a Balakot Movement event and unleashed a barrage of lies. His target? Bangladesh’s most revered Sufi institutions, including Jamia Ahmadia Sunnia Kamil Madrasa, Maizbhandar Darbar Sharif, and Amir Bhandar Darbar Sharif. He claimed that a military raid had uncovered weapons at the madrasa and that similar raids on the Darbars might reveal the same. No evidence. No facts. Just a calculated smear to inflame division.
A Legacy of Peace Under Siege
Let’s be clear: the institutions Shahjahan attacked aren’t just buildings or organizations. They’re the lifeblood of Bangladesh’s spiritual and cultural heritage. Jamia Ahmadia Sunnia Kamil Madrasa is the center of Sufi-learning in Bangladesh, drawing students from across the country to study faith and ethics. The Maizbhandar and Amir Bhandar Darbars are sacred spaces where millions find solace, their teachings rooted in love and coexistence. For centuries, these places have stood as proof that faith can unite, not divide. Administrative records? Spotless. Evidence of violence or weapons? Nonexistent.
So why the lies? Netizens say, Shahjahan’s words aren’t a slip of the tongue. They’re a calculated move by Jamaat-e-Islami, a party with a checkered past, to claw its way back into relevance. Banned until August 2024 for its role in Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War, Jamaat is desperate to rebrand itself as a modern political force. But instead of building bridges, it’s burning them, targeting the Sufi community—a group with deep grassroots support— to stir fear and division. It’s a classic tactic: demonize the marginalized to rally the masses. But as history shows, truth has a way of fighting back.
A Hollow Apology and a Violent Backdrop
Shahjahan’s response to the outrage? A half-hearted “regret” that’s as hollow as it sounds. No retraction. No clarification about his attacks on the Darbars. Just a politician’s dodge to quiet the storm while keeping the damage done.
The timing of his remarks raises even darker questions. Just one day earlier, on May 5, 2025, a peaceful protest in Muradpur demanding justice for the murder of Sunni students’ leader Shahid Rois Uddin turned violent when Sufi community members were attacked. Shahjahan’s speech the next day praised Jamaat activists involved in the protest, hinting at the party’s hand in the chaos. Coincidence? Hardly. This smells like a coordinated effort to inflame tensions, with the Sufi community caught in the crosshairs.
“When a leader praises violence one day and smears peacekeepers the next, you don’t need a conspiracy theory to connect the dots,” said a political analyst.
Now, students from institutions like University of Dhaka, Chittagong University, and others have fought back. They’ve issued a signed memorandum—a Smaraklipi—condemning Shahjahan’s “heinous act” as an attack on the Sufi community.
The students’ memorandum, endorsed by hundreds across campuses, pulls no punches. It calls Shahjahan’s claims “a deliberate attempt to defame institutions that embody Bangladesh’s pluralistic heritage.” We’re adding that memorandum herewith for the better understanding of the fact.

On May 6, 2025, at an event organized by the Balakot Movement, Mr. Shahjahan, the Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Chattogram metropolitan branch and a central Shura member, made false, offensive, and highly misleading statements about Bangladesh Army and Sufi Community fo Bangladesh. During his speech, he falsely claimed that a large quantity of weapons was found during a military operation at Jamia Ahmadia Sunnia Kamil Madrasa, a renowned religious educational institution in South Asia. He also made baseless remarks about Maizbhandar Darbar Sharif and Amir Bhandar Darbar Sharif, Bangladesh’s two highly respected Sufi Darbars, suggesting that weapons could be found there if raids were conducted.
These unfounded and offensive comments, made without any evidence, are not only insulting but also a malicious attempt to tarnish the reputation of peace-loving Sufi institutions. This reflects Mr. Shahjahan’s long-standing political agenda. It’s worth noting that Jamia Ahmadia Sunnia Kamil Madrasa and the mentioned Darbars have been spreading messages of peace, love, and tolerance in Bangladesh for centuries. These institutions are not just religious but are integral to Bengal’s heritage. Allegations of weapons or violence against them are entirely baseless and driven by ulterior motives. No administrative records support such claims.
Although Mr. Shahjahan later expressed “regret” for his remarks, he neither clarified nor retracted his misleading statements about the two Darbars. His so-called apology was merely a tactic to manage political pressure, not a genuine expression of remorse. This has only deepened the confusion and appears to be an attempt to deceive the public.
He also stated, “Yesterday (May 5, 2025), I thank those who worked in the field according to our Jamaat’s perspective.” This clearly indicates Jamaat-e-Islami’s direct support and involvement in the violent attack on the Sufi community during a peaceful blockade in Muradpur, demanding justice for the murder of Shahid Rois Uddin, an Imam, Khatib, and Islamic scholar. This is not just a political issue but evidence of indirectly encouraging criminal acts.
We believe these provocative statements and falsehoods pose a direct challenge to the rule of law, national security, and social harmony. As peace-loving citizens, we strongly condemn and protest this behavior.
We urge the authorities to treat these statements and actions as criminal offenses and take appropriate legal action. We also demand that Mr. Shahjahan retract his misleading statements and issue a clear, public, and written apology for spreading misinformation against these institutions. We believe this smear campaign is planned and politically motivated.
We hold firm that the truth cannot be suppressed. Our goal is to enlighten society with love, tolerance, and knowledge. As believers in the Sufi-Sunni tradition, we will always stand for peace. We reject weapons and violence, placing our faith in the power of knowledge and morality.

গত ৬ মে ২০২৫ ঈসায়ি রবিবার, বালাকোট আন্দোলনের এক অনুষ্ঠানে জামায়াতে ইসলামীর চট্টগ্রাম মহানগর শাখার আমির ও কেন্দ্রীয় শূরা সদস্য জনাব শাহজাহান একটি বেদনাদায়ক, অসত্য, জঘন্য ও গভীর বিভ্রান্তিমূলক বক্তব্য প্রদান করেন। বক্তব্যের একপর্যায়ে তিনি দক্ষিণ এশিয়াখ্যাত দ্বীনি শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান জামেয়া আহমদিয়া সুন্নিয়া কামিল মাদরাসা সম্পর্কে মিথ্যাচার করে বলেন—সেখানে সেনাবাহিনীর অভিযানে বিপুল পরিমাণ অস্ত্র পাওয়া গেছে। একই সাথে মাইজভাণ্ডার দরবার শরীফ ও আমির ভাণ্ডার দরবার শরীফ সম্পর্কেও কুধারণা পোষণ করে বলেন—সেখানে অভিযান চালালেও অস্ত্র পাওয়া যেতে পারে।
কোনপ্রকার প্রমাণ ও তথ্যহীন এই অপ্রত্যাশিত, অপ্রীতিকর মন্তব্য শুধুমাত্র অপমানজনক নয়, বরং এটি শান্তিপ্রিয় সুফি ধারার প্রতিষ্ঠানের অক্ষুন্ন ভাবমূর্তি নষ্ট করার হীন চেষ্টা, যা জনাব শাহজাহানের দীর্ঘদিনের রাজনৈতিক এজেন্ডারই বহিঃপ্রকাশ।
উল্লেখ্য, জামেয়া আহমদিয়া সুন্নিয়া কামিল মাদরাসা ও উল্লিখিত দরবারসমূহ শতাব্দী ধরে প্রিয় মাতৃভূমি বাংলাদেশে শান্তি, ভালোবাসা ও সহনশীলতার বার্তা ছড়িয়ে এসেছে। এই প্রতিষ্ঠানসমূহ শুধুমাত্র ধর্মীয় নয়, বরং বাংলার ঐতিহ্যের অন্যতম অংশ। এদের বিরুদ্ধে অস্ত্র ও সহিংসতার অভিযোগ সম্পূর্ণ ভিত্তিহীন ও উদ্দেশ্যপ্রণোদিত। প্রশাসনিক রেকর্ডেও কখনোই এই প্রতিষ্ঠানের বিরুদ্ধে এমন অভিযোগের প্রমাণ নেই।
জনাব শাহজাহান তার বক্তব্য নিয়ে পরবর্তীতে ‘দুঃখ প্রকাশ’ করলেও, তিনি উল্লিখিত দুটি দরবার সম্পর্কে তার বিভ্রান্তিকর মন্তব্যের কোনো ব্যাখ্যা বা সংশোধনী প্রদান করেননি। বরং তার দুঃখ প্রকাশ ছিল রাজনৈতিক চাপ সামাল দেওয়ার কৌশলমাত্র। এটি ক্ষমা নয়, একটি নাটকীয় অবস্থান গ্রহণ, যা বিভ্রান্তি আরও বাড়িয়েছে এবং জাতিকে ধোঁকায় রাখার অপচেষ্টা।
তিনি আরও বলেন— “গতকাল (৫ মে ২০২৫) আমাদের জামায়াতের দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি অনুসারে যারা ময়দানে কাজ করেছেন আমি তাদেরকে ধন্যবাদ জানাই।” এই বক্তব্য থেকেই পরিষ্কার বোঝা যায়, মুরাদপুর এলাকায় শহিদ রইস উদ্দিন হত্যার বিচারের দাবিতে শান্তিপূর্ণ অবরোধ কর্মসূচিতে সুফি কমিউনিটির উপর সংঘটিত সহিংস হামলার পেছনে জামায়াত ইসলামীর প্রত্যক্ষ সমর্থন ও সংশ্লিষ্টতা রয়েছে। এটি শুধুমাত্র রাজনৈতিক নয়, বরং একটি ফৌজদারি অপরাধে পরোক্ষ উৎসাহদানের প্রমাণ।
আমরা মনে করি— এই উস্কানিমূলক বক্তব্য ও মিথ্যাচার রাষ্ট্রের আইন, নিরাপত্তা এবং সামাজিক সম্প্রীতির প্রতি সরাসরি চ্যালেঞ্জ। দেশের শান্তিপ্রিয় নাগরিক হিসেবে আমরা এর তীব্র প্রতিবাদ ও নিন্দা জানাচ্ছি।
আমরা প্রশাসনের দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করছি যেন এই বক্তব্য ও কর্মকাণ্ডকে ফৌজদারি অপরাধ হিসেবে চিহ্নিত করে যথাযথ আইনানুগ ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ করা হয়। সেই সাথে আমরা জনাব শাহজাহানকে বিভ্রান্তিকর বক্তব্য প্রত্যাহার করে উল্লিখিত প্রতিষ্ঠানের বিরুদ্ধে অপপ্রচারের জন্য স্পষ্টভাবে, জনসমক্ষে ও লিখিতভাবে ক্ষমা প্রার্থনার দাবি জানাচ্ছি। আমাদের বিশ্বাস— এই অপপ্রচার পরিকল্পিত ও রাজনৈতিক স্বার্থসংশ্লিষ্ট।
আমরা বিশ্বাস করি— সত্য কখনো চাপা থাকে না। ভালোবাসা, সহনশীলতা ও জ্ঞানের আলো দিয়ে সমাজকে আলোকিত করাই আমাদের লক্ষ্য। যারা সুফি ধারার আদর্শে বিশ্বাস করি— সব সময় শান্তির পক্ষে থাকবো। অস্ত্র ও সহিংসতা নয়; বরং জ্ঞান ও নৈতিকতার শক্তিতেই আমরা বিশ্বাসী।
