A catastrophic plane crash near Ahmedabad, India, has claimed the lives of more than 200 people after an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed shortly after takeoff on June 12, 2025. The flight, AI171, was bound for London’s Gatwick Airport when it went down in a densely populated residential area, causing extensive destruction on the ground and multiple casualties among locals.

Crash Details and Immediate Aftermath

The aircraft departed Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:38 p.m. local time but lost contact with air traffic control less than a minute later at an altitude of approximately 625 feet. Flight data showed the plane began descending rapidly with a vertical speed of -475 feet per minute before crashing into buildings near the airport perimeter. The plane made a Mayday call shortly after takeoff but then ceased communication.

Eyewitness footage captured the plane suddenly losing altitude and crashing in a massive plume of fire and thick black smoke. Rescue teams quickly arrived at the scene, battling intense fires fueled by the aircraft’s jet fuel. The crash site included a doctors’ hostel belonging to BJ Medical College, where many medical students were injured or killed. Authorities report that between 50 and 60 medical students have been admitted to local hospitals, with some in critical condition.

Casualties and Nationalities

Ahmedabad Police Commissioner G.S. Malik confirmed there were likely no survivors aboard the flight and that casualties also occurred on the ground due to the plane crashing into residential and office buildings. The exact death toll is still being ascertained, but early reports indicate over 200 fatalities.

Air India stated that among the 242 people onboard, 169 were Indian nationals, 53 British, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. The crash has deeply affected families across multiple countries, prompting emergency response teams and crisis centers, including one set up at London’s Gatwick Airport to assist relatives.

Official Responses and Ongoing Rescue Efforts

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound sorrow, calling the tragedy “heartbreaking beyond words” and confirmed he is closely monitoring the situation. The country’s Civil Aviation Minister and other officials have mobilized emergency and aviation agencies to coordinate rescue and investigation efforts.

Air India CEO Campbell Wilson pledged full support for victims and their families and announced a dedicated team of caregivers is en route to Ahmedabad. Boeing, manufacturer of the 787 Dreamliner, stated it is in contact with Air India and stands ready to assist with investigations.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Foreign Secretary David Lammy conveyed condolences and confirmed the UK government’s active involvement in supporting British nationals affected by the crash. King Charles and Queen Camilla also expressed shock and paid tribute to emergency responders.

Investigation and Aviation Context

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched a formal investigation into the crash, with technical experts from Boeing expected to assist. Early expert commentary suggests investigators will examine whether the plane’s slats and flaps were properly configured during takeoff, as initial images show the aircraft descending with its nose elevated but insufficient lift.

This incident marks the first fatal crash involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner since its introduction in 2011. The aircraft type is widely used globally, with over 1,175 in service operating approximately 2,100 flights daily.

Broader Impact

The crash occurred in Ahmedabad, a major city with a population of 7-8 million and the home state of Prime Minister Modi. The route between Ahmedabad and London is heavily trafficked, especially by the large Gujarati diaspora in the UK.

This tragedy not only represents a devastating loss of life but also raises urgent questions about aviation safety and emergency preparedness in one of India’s busiest airports. Rescue and recovery operations continue amid ongoing efforts to support survivors and the families of victims.

This tragic event marks a somber moment for India, the UK, and the global aviation community as investigations proceed to uncover the cause of the crash and prevent future disasters.
